하갈은 광야에서 하나님을 만난 성경 최초의 인물입니다. 창세기 16장에서는 신분과 성별, 국적을 초월하여 고통의 부르짖음에 응답하시는 하나님을 만나게 됩니다. 광야에서 하나님께서는 하갈을 위로하시고 엄청난 언약을 해주십니다. 이는 우리로 하여금 먼 훗날 출애굽을 떠오르게 합니다. 이집트에서 민족을 이룬 이스라엘은 애굽을 떠나 광야에서 40년 간 지냅니다. 거기서 그들은 성막을 짓고 하나님을 섬기게 됩니다. 또한 언약을 받게 됩니다. 그러는 동안 그들은 하나님을 바라보게 됩니다. 광야에서 하나님을 체험하면서, 그들은 더이상 도망친 히브리 노예가 아닌 "선택받은 하나님의 백성, 자유인"으로 스스로를 바라보게 됩니다. 우리도 광야와 같은 이 세상에서 하나님을 바라보고 또 믿음의 눈으로 우리를 바라보아야 합니다. 그리스도께서 주시는 자유함이 우리의 삶 가운데 펼쳐지기를 간구합니다.
