We are brought up to constantly feel like we are in competition with others. As well as competing, we constantly compare ourselves to others, and thanks to the platforms like Instagram, we compare ourselves to a very small snapshot of other people’s lives which isn’t representative of the whole picture of everyday life.
Somewhere along the way, we’ve been told that there are limited spaces at the top, and we need to 'win' each race to feel loved, happy, successful, fulfilled. If we don’t ‘win’ at every race then somehow we’ve failed. We end up feeling like we’re just not beautiful enough, not smart enough, not wise enough, not fast enough.
Comparing ourselves to others is one of the most pointless things we can do… Everyone is on their own journey. Everyone’s path is unique. If we are to have any competition, then we compete with ourselves. Ask yourself, how can I do better than yesterday? Have you seen the Friends episode where Monica is competing with her last year self to make the best Thanksgiving meal ever? This to me is a healthy form of competition. One where we are focusing on ourselves and how we can learn and grow.
By encouraging community and connection over perfection, you will in turn find such inner peace and love within yourself. You won’t feel disappointed or like you just aren’t good enough. You won’t feel the need to compete or compare yourself to others because you will be working together towards a common goal.
Journal prompt: How can I find ways of being in community with others? Is there a local community or club that I can join?
