3. Congratulations! - Selamat!. Part One

How to congratulate on special occasions in Indonesia and how people celebrate. 


New vocabulary and phrases:

  1. Nyepi -  To be quiet or to be silent. 

  2. Selamat - Congratulations, safely. 

  3. Hari - Day. 

  4. Raya - Grand, great, big. 

  5. Selamat hari raya Nyepi - I hope that you celebrate the Great Quiet day in peace.

  6. Ogoh-ogoh (Balinese) - The shaking

  7. Puasa - Fasting. 

  8. Selamat puasa - I hope that your fasting will be complete. 

  9. Sahur - Early morning breakfast at around 3am

  10. Bedug - Drum made of goat skin 

  11. Buka - Open

  12. Selamat buka puasa - Congratulations that you can now break your fast.

  13. Lebaran (Kawi) - Completed. 

  14. Lebaran - Eid

  15. Selamat Lebaran  - Congratulations for completing the fasting. 

  16. Hijriah (Arabic) - Lunar calendar 

  17. Eid alFitr (Arabic) - Holy and breaking the fast.

  18. Selamat Idul Fitri - Congratulations for completing the fasting on this holy month

  19. Maaf - Sorry, apologies. 

  20. Lahir - Born,  a metaphor for what is said and done

  21. Batin - Mind, spiritual, the metaphor for unspoken words. 

  22. Maaf lahir dan batin - Apologies for any wrongdoing, as well as the unspoken.

  23. Ketupat - Glutinous rice, wrapped in coconut leaves 

  24. Sayur - Vegetables

  25. Santan - Coconut milk

  26. Rendang - Slow cooked meat in santan and various spices.
