Forget Santa — Victorian Christmases belonged to the dead.
In the 1800s, winter ghost stories weren’t told at Halloween. They were whispered at Christmas, beside flickering fires, while the rest of the house lay in darkness.
In this video, we step back into that world and explore three of the most terrifying Victorian Christmas ghost stories ever written — tales of child spirits, cruel betrayals, and ominous warnings from beyond the grave.
These stories were originally told by candlelight, meant to be heard in silence, and designed to linger long after the fire burned low. And even today, they remain deeply unsettling.
Tonight’s stories include:
– A child ghost that returns to the window on a frozen Christmas night
– A confession so horrifying it stole a woman’s youth
– A spectral warning that comes too late to save a man from his fate
The first two tales appear in The Valancourt Book of Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories, and I highly recommend the BBC adaptation of The Signalman if you’ve never seen it.
