In the latest episode of the Babylon Balkan Show, we have the honor of hosting Matija Grebenic, an extraordinary individual whose journey of resilience and achievement has touched many hearts. Born in Zagreb, Croatia, in the 1990s, Matija faced the challenges of Tibia Aplasia and limb malformations. However, his indomitable spirit led him to conquer every obstacle in his path.
Matija's incredible story unfolds with his early immersion in the world of swimming, which began during his first-grade year in 1998. Despite his physical condition, he exhibited remarkable talent and dedication, propelling him to compete at prestigious events such as the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro (2009), Eindhoven (2010), Montreal (2013), and Glasgow (2015). Notably, his achievements include a fourth-place finish in the 200m freestyle in Rio, a remarkable fifth-place ranking in Reykjavik, and a commendable seventh-place performance at the London (2012) Paralympic Games.
While pursuing his education, Matija enrolled in Communication Studies, specializing in public relations, media relations, communications, and business development. This diverse skill set eventually led him to Bonn, Germany, where he currently serves as the Brand Coordinator for the International Paralympic Committee. Here, Matija expertly navigates sports marketing, internal communications, and project management, leaving an indelible mark on the Paralympic movement.
Despite enduring numerous surgeries, with nine operations in total, Matija's unwavering determination and love for sports continue to shine through. Orthoprostheses and a wheelchair support him in his mobility when needed, showcasing his resilience and unwavering commitment to his dreams.
