Today is November 25.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Take a moment and quiet yourself. Take a deep breath. Welcome God’s presence. And say, “Come Holy Spirit.”

Today’s reading is from the book of 2 Kings, chapter 23.

24 Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the temple of the Lord. 25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.

Time and time again God calls his people to become holy. He reminds them of their proclivity to worship idols and vague spiritualities instead of God. Sometimes, even now in the midst of a holiday season, we become distracted, and our attention, our heart, our soul, our strength… gets aimed toward wrong, unhelpful, or harmful distractions. Take a moment as you come to prayer and ask God to help you turn your heart to the Lord.

King Josiah does his part in bringing the people of Israel toward the call of holiness before God, and attention toward God. In order to do this, scripture tells us that he ‘gets rid of’ all sorts of things. In other words, he cleans house. As you listen to the text again, search your own heart for one thing that you may need to ‘clean up’ or ‘get rid of’ so that you can turn your full attention toward the Lord. What is distracting you from faithfulness today?

As we close our time of prayer, consider what it means for you to live in such a way as to turn to the Lord with your whole heart, soul, and strength. Ask God for grace to be so oriented to him that you become an overflow of His loving-kindness to those around you.
