Three Key Predictions for 2022 Fiber Deployments
Kevin Morgan, CMO at Clearfield, predicts three significant trends for fiber deployments in 2022. Firstly, carriers will aim to double the rate of homes passed, as this will directly impact their Wall Street valuations. They will streamline fiber connections and leverage modern techniques to boost installation rates. Secondly, larger cable MSOs will transition to all-fiber networks, following a 50% rise in cable MSO fiber deployment in 2021, primarily driven by smaller Tier 2 and Tier 3 carriers. Finally, 2022 will witness 5G expanding beyond enhanced mobile broadband into massive machine-to-machine and industrial IoT applications. Open RAN (O-RAN) is expected to grow, displacing proprietary hardware, and promoting disaggregated open-source networks built using software-defined networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). These factors will drive increased fiber use as 5G services continue to expand beyond urban areas.
