James Sexton On The Existential Masculinity Crisis

Back in 2008, Ben Bernanke assured Americans that QE was a temporary crisis tool and the Fed’s balance sheet would soon be lower than when they started. Yet, the Fed’s balance sheet has grown steadily ever since. Now, Jerome Powell is effectively telling us that bigger may be better again.

The timing is highly unusual. Stocks, home prices, gold, money supply, and national debt are all at record highs. So, in this overheated environment, why is the central bank easing monetary policy?

The reason is that multiple deflationary forces loom: artificial intelligence and robotics are automating away inefficiencies, tariffs are reshaping trade, and a surge in deportations is tightening labor markets. Each would be worth watching on their own, but they collectively create the perfect storm for the Fed to fail at monetary policy
