A BIM Model consists of only 2 Things!

Hello and welcome back to BIM Shorts, where we dive into key insights about Building Information Modelling in quick, digestible episodes. I'm Puneet Thakre, an architect passionate about BIM, and I'm on a mission to make BIM transitions smoother.

  • In today's BIM Short, I delve into the third dimension of BIM. But before we explore BIM dimensions, it's essential to understand that any BIM model fundamentally consists of just two types of data: geometrical and non-geometrical.
  • For example, think of a door. Its geometry defines its shape and boundaries, visible in a 3D view. The non-geometrical data includes information like material, finishes, type, level, and placement. BIM is all about creating and managing this information, essentially modeling data. That’s why we call it Building Information Modelling, reflecting our era of data technology where data is the new wealth.
  • Now, let's talk about the third dimension in BIM. BIM dimensions are layers of information added to a BIM model. 3D BIM differs from 3D CAD in that it includes an information layer, making the model more valuable and useful. This information layer allows us to extract data as needed, in the form of schedules, drawings, and views.
  • Stay tuned for more BIM dimensions in upcoming episodes. If you found this episode helpful, don't hesitate to like and share it with your friends, colleagues, and maybe even someone you have a crush on. Let’s make BIM knowledge accessible at your fingertips. Join me next time for another BIM Short. Thank you for listening, and remember, in BIM, we are building not just structures but the future of the AEC industry. Stay inspired, stay curious, and let's grow together in the realm of BIM.
