Over ten thousand acres of longleaf pine forest, a critically endangered ecosystem, have been permanently protected across Alabama and Georgia. The Conservation Fund, a nonprofit organization, completed its Stateline Forest project by transferring land tracts to each state for preservation. This initiative safeguards vital habitats for numerous species, including bats, and creates pathways for animals to move freely between habitats. The protected land also includes nearly forty-five miles of waterways, home to rare freshwater mussels, fish, and other aquatic life. The newly protected land will be managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Alabama Forestry Commission, ensuring public access for recreational activities. The project was funded by various sources, including the Richard King Mellon Foundation, state-specific programs, and a federal grant, demonstrating a collaborative effort to preserve this important natural resource.
