Since 1907 the Lobstermen and women of Monhegan Island have observed their special lobster season and conservation zone around the island with trap limits and a strict season to lobster. October 1 is the official start of the lobstering season with a 'all go or none go" sense of fair play and community solidarity. Despite threats, sometimes violent, and incursion by mainland lobstermen the people of Monhegan Island have observed their tradition of stewarding their lobster grounds for the benefit of current and future generations of Lobstermen/women.
