Shamatha, often called "calm abiding" meditation, involves single-pointed concentration on a chosen object. The goal is to cultivate a state of inner peace and mental flexibility, free from distracting thoughts and mental constructs. Think of it as training your mind to settle into stillness.

Vipassana, or "insight meditation," takes a different approach. It involves analyzing phenomena to understand their true nature. This often utilizes conceptual thinking and careful observation of your experiences.


While the sutras often suggest that Shamatha should precede Vipassana, it's important to note that both practices can be integrated. The distinction between them isn't always absolute, and some traditions emphasize their combined practice.
