In this episode of Caviar Conversations, I sit down with Mai Nguyen, founder and owner of Zen Den Hair, to dive into the realities of female entrepreneurship and the journey of building a thriving business. Mai shares how she began her journey into hair at the young age of 5 years old where her siblings would ask her to braid their hair. Soon Mai became known as the go-to for helping her friends with their hair. Hair became second nature to Mai. After hair school, she started her career working in a hair salon at the mall, building up her clientele while recognizing she wanted more and wanted to give more to her clients. Together with her sister, she leaped to open her salon in Yaletown, where she’s transformed her brand multiple times to stay true to her vision. Mai is refreshingly honest with clients, setting clear boundaries about what’s achievable and healthy for their hair. She has no problem saying no to her clients and this has allowed her to give her clients great results while keeping their hair healthy for the long term. We talk about not making desperate business moves such as hiring staff and taking the time to hire people who are a good fit for the brand and culture of the business. Mai talks about staying true to her values, which has allowed her business to continue to thrive over decades.
