Henry Purcell | ClassicBaz Podcast
If you've always felt a curiosity or a quiet pull toward classical music — but never found an easy, friendly way to enter its vast and complex world — this podcast is for you.
I’m Reza Taheri, with an academic background in philosophy and aesthetics. In ClassicBaz, I try to approach classical music as an eager listener and passionate explorer, and I’d love to have you alongside me on this journey.
In Episode 3, we dive into the life and music of one of the most remarkable composers of the Baroque era: Henry Purcell.Despite his short life, Purcell shaped the identity of English music and became one of the most influential cultural figures in 17th-century Britain.
In this episode:
* We begin with one of his choral works and explore what makes Purcell’s choral writing so vivid, dynamic, and emotionally engaging.
* We travel back to 17th-century Westminster, a London recovering from civil war, the rule of Cromwell, and the return of the monarchy during the Restoration — a period when art and music flourished once again.
* We follow Purcell’s early years in the Chapel Royal, his training as a choirboy, and his rapid rise to becoming a court composer for string instruments.
* We discuss his sonatas, anthems, sacred music, and his major theatrical works, including The Fairy Queen, King Arthur, and the iconic opera Dido and Aeneas.
* You’ll also hear excerpts from the Abdelazer Suite (Z.570) and, to close the episode, the deeply moving aria “Dido’s Lament”by New Trinity Baroque.
We also look at Purcell’s lasting influence — from film and television to the modern revival of Baroque music — and why his voice still resonates today.
