Malcolm Douglas - How wilderness can transform lives

My very first guest in "Coaching in nature" is Malcolm Douglas.

Malcolm Douglas has been a noteworthy leader in outdoor education in South Africa for over thirty years, most notably in the fields of nature guiding and conservation.

His work in the private sector as professional guide and guide trainer has made a significant contribution to the ecotourism industry, leaving a legacy of senior level professionals who trained under him. He has been a core member for the Field Guides Association of South Africa since 1992 and is a qualified professional field guide and qualifications assessor with specialisation in dangerous game.

Malcolm contributed to the Southern African Wildlife College in the greater Kruger National Park region as head of wildlife management qualifications. These programs were aimed at upskilling middle management staff from wildlife areas throughout the SADC region. In this area he also lectured students in ecology, animal studies, plant studies, conservation ethics and cultural heritage management. He is also an instructor in the practical conservation aspects of wildland fire management, erosion control, invasive species control and fence erection and maintenance.

Most recently, Malcolm has focussed on the youth of South Africa and is currently the head of the St John’s College Wilderness School which provides opportunities for students to learn about nature and themselves in the natural world. He is particularly focussed on the effect nature has on over-stressed and information-overloaded young people and how nature-based programs can impact their lives.

Malcolm has three adult daughters living overseas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in archaeology from the University of Witwatersrand and currently resides in the Limpopo province of South Africa.

Malcolm has truly wilderness running in his veins. He gives us great insights in his experience in wilderness, difficult situations he has managed and how ecology and psychology work together, which can also be called "eco psychology". You learn about what nature has taught him and how nature can transform lives.

Find here the list of his book tips:

  • Aldo Leopold:
    • A Sand County Almanac (New York: Oxford, 1949)
    • Round River: From the Journals of Aldo Leopold (New York: Oxford, 1953)
    • A Sand County Almanac and Other Writings on Ecology and Conservation (New York: Library of America, 2013)
  • Edward Abbey - many different titles, but particularly good is "Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness" (1968) (ISBN 0-8165-1057-1
  • Richard Rohr - also a prolific author but the one we referred to was "Adam's Return: The Five Promises of Male Initiation" (Crossroad Publishing Co, U. S., 2004) ISBN 978-0-8245-2280-3
