Lectiones Inaugurales of the Intesa Sanpaolo Chairs in Economics

Giovanni Mastrobuoni

“Economics of crime”

Measuring which policies do and do not work is crucial for developing effective policies, especially within the criminal justice system, where decisions carry profound societal impacts. Causal inference, with its ability to identify underlying factors and predict outcomes, plays a central role. In the criminal justice system, for example, causal inference helps assess which prison treatments can reduce recidivism and support successful reintegration, while in financial regulation, it may help in identifying norms that reduce patterns of behavior that could signal potential risks or fraud. The presentation will showcase how economic research, including work by Mastrobuoni and colleagues, has addressed these critical policy questions.

Introduction by Alessandra Voena, Professor of Economics, Stanford University

Federico Ravenna

“Economic challenges in an uncertain macroeconomy”

Economic policy has been operating under extreme uncertainty for some years. What answers can macroeconomic models provide when the economy is exposed to extreme risks, and economic policy must balance the most appropriate response to shocks with the goal of avoiding borderline and irreversible situations? We will discuss the impact of uncertainty on European GDP, the role of ‘animal spirits’ in the impact of uncertainty, the effects of climate change risks on monetary policy, and the consequences of wage inequality.

Introduction by Lucrezia Reichlin, Professor of Economics, London Business School
