While the recruitment of James, John, and Peter was odd due to their status as fishermen, Levi is controversial because of his status as a tax collector. Pharisees even label him a sinner and persona non grata. Imagine Levi’s joy when Jesus chooses him, knowing that the way of Christ is not only about growth but about compassion for those who are on the margins and hurting.
