---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ChatGPT just released their new image generation model and I'm putting it head-to-head against Google's Nano Banana to see which creates better ecommerce product images. I tested both using my 2-step AI employee system on a hyaluronic acid serum product, and the results are shocking. My verdict: Gemini wins for realism, ChatGPT wins for visual appeal and advertising.
The Battle Setup: ChatGPT used to be the image generation standard, then Google's Nano Banana (Gemini) took over with hyper-realistic results. Now ChatGPT has released a new model to compete directly. I'm testing both with the same product, same prompts, same AI employee workflows to determine which is better for ecommerce businesses. The images on the left are ChatGPT, the right are Gemini—both look professional, but there are critical differences.
My 2-Step AI Employee System: Step 1 - The Planner (ChatGPT, 18-page prompt): This AI employee becomes your expert ecommerce graphic designer and prompt engineer. It handles three phases: (1) Product Intake - Upload product images and provide product name. AI analyzes every aspect in depth. (2) Brand Reference Intake - Show AI what aesthetic you want. I use Pinterest hack: search "Instagram feed" and select color schemes (blue/white, pink, beige, etc.). AI analyzes color palette, visual DNA, lighting, texture, human presence, emotional tone, and strategic positioning. (3) Use Case Definition - Tell AI you want Facebook/Instagram ads. It creates a comprehensive brand visual guide with detailed specifications.
What Makes This System Different: Most people keep everything in one chat. I split tasks—planning in one AI employee, execution in another. This improves quality because each AI focuses on one job. The planner also becomes an unlimited idea generator, creating 3 new concepts every time you need ads. For this serum, concept #1 was "the first touch"—serum touching skin with beautiful lighting and composition.
Step 2 - The Executor (10-page prompt, works on ChatGPT OR Gemini): Take the detailed prompt from your planner AI and paste it into a new window with your chosen executor (ChatGPT's new model or Google Gemini). Critical hack: Always attach product reference images with the prompt so AI doesn't forget what your product looks like. The executor handles product intake, brand reference understanding, and final image generation with excruciating detail baked in.
Head-to-Head Results - My Honest Verdict: Google Nano Banana (Gemini): Produces more realistic-looking images. Better for testimonials, real-life scenarios, UGC-style content. Feels like authentic photography. Slightly worse at following instructions (sometimes skips steps). ChatGPT's New Model: Produces more visually appealing images. Better for advertising, branding, eye-catching content. More polished and perfect. Better at following the workflow precisely.
When to Use Each: Use ChatGPT for: Paid ads (Facebook/Instagram), Branding content, Eye-catching visuals, Polished product shots. Use Gemini for: Testimonial images, Real-life scenarios, UGC content, Authentic-looking photos. Ideal setup: Have both. Use ChatGPT for ad creatives, use Gemini for realistic testimonials. Both require Pro plans but worth the investment for ecommerce.
The images generated don't look AI-generated because of extreme detail in planning: exact lighting specifications, precise color palettes, detailed composition framing, specific mood and emotional tone, comprehensive background systems. This is why my AI employees are 18 and 10 pages long—detail creates quality.
