Sarah Mercer | From Law to Ecology: Discover the Journey of a Passionate Environmental Advocate
In this episode of The Deep Dive, we’re joined by Sarah Mercer, co-founder of Earthscope, a social enterprise dedicated to transforming the Isle of Man into a nature-first nation. Sarah shares her journey from aspiring environmental lawyer to climate communicator and change maker, offering insight into how Earthscope is driving sustainability through transformative training, stakeholder engagement, and community-led initiatives tailored to the Island’s unique needs. The conversation explores the connections between climate change and biodiversity loss, the importance of embedding nature into corporate governance, and why local action is vital in addressing global challenges. Sarah also speaks to the urgent need to cut greenhouse gas emissions - often discussed in terms of fossil fuel use (and she notes that in this context, she misspoke early in the episode and meant to say “greenhouse gases”) - and the power of storytelling in inspiring collective action. Since recording, Sarah has let us know that 18 new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) have been submitted globally since the original 2020 pledges - an encouraging sign of increasing climate ambition.
