This is day 356 of our journey.
This letter was written to a group of believers struggling with a heartbreaking and dangerous situation. Some of their fellowship had abandoned the truth of the Gospel and, creating a hybrid doctrine swayed by false religions of the region, they denied the truth of the incarnation of Christ in physical form. They lived immoral lives and lacked love for others yet they still openly claimed to know God and belong to God. The believers that were left behind, those still trying to follow the Gospel of Christ, were deeply shaken and uncertain about everything they had been taught. John writes this letter to reassure them of what they have heard from the beginning. He testifies to the reality of the Messiah coming in the flesh. He emphasizes that they have full access to the truth and that the truth is love. God is love and everyone who is of God lives a life of love!
