This gap creates a critical dilemma for policymakers: move too slowly and risk catastrophe; move too fast and risk stifling essential innovation and losing global competitiveness.This episode dissects the AI Speed Dilemma:

• The Risk of Regulatory Lag: When lawmakers wait for a technology to "mature" before regulating, they create a regulatory vacuum (Source 1.2, 4.4). This allows powerful, unsupervised AI systems to be deployed, creating significant unforeseen risks—from systemic financial instability and algorithmic discrimination to large-scale cyber vulnerabilities and deepfakes—before society has a chance to respond (Source 1.5).
• The Risk of Premature Regulation: Conversely, regulating an emerging technology too quickly—often with "one-size-fits-all" rules—can stifle innovation, create huge barriers to entry for smaller companies, and freeze domestic industries, making them less competitive globally (Source 4.1, 4.2).
