Is There Evidence That Weight Loss Medications Can Also Help Treat Addiction

In this episode, PAIN Founder Flindt Andersen and Jason Lachance explore groundbreaking new research on medications like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and other GLP-1 receptor agonists — originally developed for Type 2 diabetes and weight loss — that may also play a significant role in addiction treatment.

Early studies suggest these medications could help reduce cravings and relapse rates. In fact, researchers found that People with alcohol use disorder who were prescribed Ozempic or similar drugs had a 50% lower rate of binge drinking. Individuals with opioid use disorder taking these medications had a 40% lower rate of opioid overdose.
