In 1956, a 10-year-old David Beatty is cycling through the woods of Bedfordshire when he comes across an unlikely shaman—a traveler who lives a solitary life in a caravan—who introduces him to poetry, a man called Buddha and the wisdom of the East; setting the youngster off on a journey of discovery, through the years and around the world, which eventually leads him to a small hermitage island in Sri Lanka, and to an owl named Bakamuna.
