In our 1st chapter analyzing sci-fi dystopias, we explore "The New Utopia," a short story written by Jerome K. Jerome in 1891 and the first known literary work depicting a dystopian future. In this video, we'll delve into the story's themes and its context in British society at the time, where Marxist ideas were taking hold in the upper middle class. We'll compare the story's dystopian vision to other famous dystopian works like Aldus Huxley's "Brave New World" and George Orwell's "1984." Despite being written over 130 years ago, this story shares many common themes with modern dystopian literature, raising questions about the veracity of our fears of a coming dystopia.
