Running hot with lights and sirens on at high speed is like running with scissors on the ice. It's so dangerous and although it's necessary, the danger you impose onto the community trying to stop some other catastrophe in progress should never be taken for granted.
Los Angeles police have released the dashcam footage from the Sept. 19 accident in Highland Park where 30-year-old skateboarder Gerardo “Jerry” Estrada was fatally struck by an LAPD cruiser responding to an emergency call. Best selling author and former cop Eric Tansey will explain the unavoidable danger created every time an officer drives lights-and-sirens through a crowded city. The officer was racing to help establish a perimeter for a felony warrant suspect, weaving through blocked lanes on Figueroa Street with full emergency equipment activated when Estrada appeared in the road. This tragedy illustrates the desperate balancing act of emergency response—trying to reach someone who needs help fast, while every second also puts the community at risk. There is no simple solution, only training, vigilance, and the constant reminder that driving code-3 is never routine.
