New General Rule: When a celebrity promotes an already existing picture book, it is rarely a good thing. I am thinking, naturally, of the episode of Friends where they read Love You Forever in its entirety. But it doesn't just happen on television shows. Recently a Kardashian recommended today's title, and to my horror and delight it's 20 years old (if you go by its original self-published publication date). A self-proclaimed books for parents (rather than children) we have to weigh Tillman's talents as an illustrator against her storytelling choices. The end result is that we have two rather different final scores. Listen and see why that is! Episode 371 - Goin' Someplace Special
Maybe Betsy is still riding high from the last American Library Association conference she attended, but we're feeling like libraries deserve lots of lovely attention. And what better book to use to that purpose than this well-known collaboration between Patricia C. McKissack and Jerry Pinkney? Can you believe that we've never done a McKissack book before? Pinkney we've definitely done before (including Sam and the Tigers, John Henry, Little Red Riding Hood, and Mirandy and Brother Wind). We discuss how Kate spoils where "someplace special" is pretty early, segregated public benches, rando celebrities, and what it means to work "without permission or pay."
