According to eyewitness accounts and video footage obtained by TMZ, the incident began when an individual pointed a phone with a bright light near DeRozan's face, prompting him to knock the device away. The video appears to show DeRozan briefly pinning the man to the ground before being separated by a woman accompanying him. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that they responded to the scene and that an investigation is ongoing. ​ After a disappointing end to the season, including a 120–106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the play-in tournament, DeRozan expressed uncertainty about his role with the team moving forward.
