Welcome back to the Gated pod. This month, Manoli Moriaty delivers a fierce, sometimes brutal mix of techno. A producer and performer with live electronics and adaptive playback systems, Manoli began in Manchester’s early-2000s free-party scene, developing a practice shaped by DJ, turntablist, and controllerist cultures. His work blends niche offshoots of popular genres with avant-garde sonorities and has been presented internationally. He now lives in Liverpool, teaching music performance and creative technology.
He recently researched DJ performance and genre conventions, saying: “When Node invited me on, I was deep in research across genres and instrument types. That shaped the mix: a chance to try new instruments, build coherence, and signal where techno could evolve. I wanted to highlight under-recognised artists, avoiding both arena-friendly anthems and underground snobbery.
The mix leans toward what Dave Clarke called post-techno, moving through four phases over 111 minutes: ambient and dub-leaning textures with abstract rhythms; fragile but darker shades; a harder midpoint driven by half-time patterns; and a rise into peak-time energy. It was recorded in my garden-shed studio last May using an Allen & Heath Xone:96 and four Traktor Kontrol D2s. Automatic sync handled tempo, letting me focus on tonal balance, arrangement, and the occasional intense head-nod.”
Thanks to Node for the invite and discussions feeding into my forthcoming Dancecult Journal article, Playing by the Rules? Genre Conventions in Contemporary DJ Performance. More at dj.dancecult.net/index.php/dancecult.

Yes, it’s true. The Gated Podcast has awoken from its long, dignified slumber, a period of reflection, spiritual realignment, and mild administrative chaos. What better way to re-emerge than with the steady hand and impeccable taste of Andy Green, the Head Gardener at Verdant Recordings.
An old head who DJs a little, goes out too much, and curates Verdant Recordings, Andy has long championed deep, diverse sounds without the faintest nod to trend or genre. That is precisely how we prefer things.
He first joined us some moons ago, and now returns with a mix that is equal parts soil, soul, and subterranean hypnosis, the kind of thing that makes you question whether sunlight was ever really necessary.
Before pressing play, visit Verdant Recordings on Bandcamp or SoundCloud (https://soundcloud.com/verdant-recordings) / https://verdantrecordings.bandcamp.com/ .
Explore their latest release, Insignia by Thomas & James, a record of elegant depth and dangerous repeat value. https://thomasandjames.bandcamp.com/album/insignia
Reacquaint yourself with Gated’s own Bandcamp, which has quietly sprouted new beauty from Joel Brittain, Lefrenk, and a proper under-the-radar digi-only release from ROI.

Kettle on. Phone off. Allow Andy Green to guide you somewhere deep, warm, and possibly in breach of local zoning laws. It feels very good to be back.
