In this educational video, Dr. John Watts discusses the Minoxidil combinations or cocktails that have recently been banned by India’s drug control authority, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), in an order issued in August 2024.
What are these banned cocktail drug combinations? Why were they banned by the CDSCO, and on what grounds? Dr John Watts — a renowned dermatologist, trichologist, and one of Hyderabad’s top hair transplant surgeons — provides detailed answers and insights on these questions.
Charan Charan N2V asks: “Sir, recently India’s drug control authority banned several types of Minoxidil combo drugs. What are these types? Please explain.”
In the last week of August 2024, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in India imposed a ban on 156 commonly used fixed drug combinations, also known as cocktail drugs, labeling them as “irrational combinations” due to their potential adverse effects on human health.
The banned drugs (the complete list is appended here) include those used for various conditions such as skin care, fever, cough and cold, and allergies. Among them are three Minoxidil combinations:
Minoxidil — azelaic acid — saw palmetto
Minoxidil — aminexil — alcohol
Minoxidil — aminexil
In response to Charan’s queries, Dr. John Watts reassured that there is no cause for concern, as the banned combinations do not include the approved plain Minoxidil or Minoxidil-Finasteride topical lotions.
Dr. John Watts explained that the rationale for banning these unapproved Minoxidil combo drugs lies in their tendency to affect the molecular stability of the drug when used in such combinations. These changes can adversely impact the properties of Minoxidil. However, the individual drugs — Minoxidil, azelaic acid, saw palmetto, and aminexil — are safe when used independently, as their molecular properties remain stable.
