In this dialogue with Colleen and Hazelle, Kaylin shares that her core desire is to bring empathy and understanding into the world—largely because she’s spent much of her life feeling misunderstood herself. Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and a strong pressure to fit in shaped her early black-and-white thinking, but moving out and meeting diverse people expanded her worldview.
She speaks openly about painful experiences of being judged or rejected by family and people in the Church, which makes her afraid to be fully herself. She also describes past seasons of deep depression and how surprising it feels to genuinely like who she is now.
Spiritually, she believes in something bigger and admires Jesus’ way of loving marginalized people, but doesn’t feel fully at home in the church based on her experiences.
Overall, she’s learning to balance empathy for others with compassion for herself, to keep growing without needing to constantly prove her worth, and to reserve her truest self for relationships that are safe.
