At age 34, I stepped onto the campus of West Los Angeles College to enter the PACE Program, feeling utterly out of place. Having barely graduating from high school and after spending over a decade as a secretary in the space and technology sector, I was burdened by an inner critic that whispered I wasn’t college material. Yet, driven by a deep desire to change not only my life but that of my children, I chose to silence that voice. This decision marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually see me soar to earn an AA, BA, and MA in 6 years while I worked full time and cared for two children. Then I earned a doctorate degree in educational leadership at age 54 to later become a community college president.
Now, I want to share this journey with you. Whether you're contemplating a career change, transitioning from full-time employment, or seeking to rediscover your passions, this podcast is for you. We'll navigate the path laid out by Joseph Campbell's iconic 'The Hero's Journey.' From the ordinary world to the call to adventure, through trials and revelations, we’ll explore these stages through personal stories and insights from my years of teaching, leading, guiding, and mentoring.

Have you ever felt that life was calling you in another direction? Sometimes, things that we’ve built and poured ourselves into, whether it be careers, institutions, or dreams, begin to change in ways that we can’t control, and letting go of what once defined us can feel impossible. However, it can also be the beginning of something new. The truth is, endings, while painful, often make space for transformation, reflection, and rediscovery.
In today's Part 3 episode, my conversation with Dr. Yun Kim continues as we discuss the closure of Emperor’s College, her family’s legacy in acupuncture, and her personal journey of navigating loss and rebirth. Dr. Kim shares what it was like to make the difficult decision to close the institution her family founded. She talks about how she cared for herself, with the help of her community, and what she’s learned about identity, leadership, and healing through undergoing this time of transition.
