#20 - "Nobody knows what brings ease, stability, and care for my body, better than I do." (2/2)

We enter into a flurry of thoughts and opinions in this 2nd part of our conversation with Leigh Khoo! Taking a stab at trauma informed yoga, we chat about how trauma shows up in yoga classes and how we can all be more aware and informed about trauma when we share our yoga practices together.

Much of trauma live as imprints in our body — our muscle tone, breath patterns, our emotional reactions to certain body postures, and capacities to arrive in the present moment, just to name a few. With that context, there is no doubt that trauma will show up in yoga classes. Some of the highlights in this episode include:

  • The need for control is the only way to feel safe when we are carrying trauma, and why that makes surrendering so hard
  • Offer invitations for inquiry instead of giving hard instructions and demands
  • Hold spaces for people to feel, and let them know that if they do not feel, that's okay too. Our practice does not determine our worth.
  • Breath attuned practice vs. breath embodied practice
  • Taking full ownership and responsibility over my Yoga practice, and the importance of a self practice
