One Family. Seven Decades. A New Kind of Historical Film: All That's Left of You
They say journalism is the first rough draft of history—but what about films based on true events that bring the past to life on screen? Are they meant to serve as a historical record, or do they use history to reveal deeper emotional truths? In this episode of INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, we’re joined by acclaimed filmmaker, writer, and actor Cherien Dabis to discuss her sweeping new film, ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU—a powerful Palestinian family drama that spans 70 years and traces the long emotional aftershocks of displacement. Set in motion by the Nakba and the 1948 expulsion from Jaffa, the film follows one uprooted family from the chaos of the 1948 war into life as refugees in the Occupied West Bank and beyond. Rather than simply recreating history, Dabis crafts a deeply human, multigenerational story about loss, survival, memory, and resilience—and how one moment of violence can reverberate through a family for decades. Dabis stars in the film alongside celebrated Palestinian actors from the legendary Bakri family—Adam Bakri, Saleh Bakri, and Mohammad Bakri—whose performances give the story striking intimacy and authenticity. After premiering to acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival and has been selected as Jordan’s official submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards (Oscars). Listen now for our in-depth conversation with Cherien Dabis about storytelling, history on film, Palestinian cinema, and what it means to bear witness through art—starting now on INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE.  @laemmle   @OfficialRaphaelSbarge   @cheriendabis   @adammbakri   @watermelonpicturesco   @TheMatchFactory @allthatsleftofyoufilm ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU, All That's Left of You film, Cherien Dabis, Palestinian cinema, Middle East cinema, Arab cinema, Palestinian film, multigenerational drama, family saga, historical drama, political drama, Nakba, 1948, Jaffa, Occupied West Bank, West Bank, displacement, refugees, intergenerational trauma, resilience, survival, memory, identity, human rights, conflict, protest, Sundance Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival Audience Award, Jordan official submission, Best International Feature, Academy Awards, Oscars submission, Bakri family, Adam Bakri, Saleh Bakri, Mohammad Bakri, INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE, indie film, arthouse film, festival film, auteur cinema #AllThatsLeftOfYou #CherienDabis #PalestinianCinema #PalestinianFilm #ArabCinema #MiddleEastCinema #IndieFilm #ArthouseFilm #FestivalFilm #HistoricalDrama #FamilySaga #MultigenerationalStory #Nakba #1948 #Jaffa #WestBank #OccupiedWestBank #Displacement #Refugees #IntergenerationalTrauma #Resilience #Survival #Memory #Identity #HumanRights #Sundance #SundanceFilmFestival #SydneyFilmFestival #AudienceAward #Oscars #AcademyAwards #BestInternationalFeature #Jordan #BakriFamily #AdamBakri #SalehBakri #MohammadBakri #InsideTheArthouse #FilmmakerInterview #CinemaPodcast #FilmPodcast #worldcinemas #arthouse #arthouseFilm @laemmle #BehindTheScenes #FilmDiscussion #MovieReview #NewReleases #NewFilmReleases #FilmLovers #Cinema #MoviePodcast #GregLaemmle #RaphaelSbarge #LaemmleTheatres #FilmDistribution #MovieIndustry #FilmBusiness Video Podcast Independent Film / Indie Film Arthouse Film / Arthouse Movie Film Lovers / Cinema New Movie Releases / New Film Releases Repertory Cinema / Classic Films / Classic Movies Filmmaker Interviews / Filmmakers (Directors, Writers, Producers) Film Distributors / Film Distribution Movie Industry / Film Business / Movie Business Behind-the-Scenes Insights Film Discussion / Movie Reviews / Film Analysis Greg Laemmle / Raphael Sbarge Laemmle Theatres Learn more about your ad choices.
