There is an old saying that you should never meet your heroes because they will only disappoint. But what about meeting the ones you have created yourself?

According to accounts found online from many comic book writers and artists (including Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman) that is exactly what happened to them.

Is it possible that these artists and writers actually dreamt their creations into existence? Is this the work of Tulpamancery? Or just a case of overworked creators seeing things that weren't there?
