Korean Vocabulary Explained 009 넘어서다 vs 지나치다: 한국어 속 두 가지 ‘넘음’의 표현 Go BEYOND or Go TOO FAR? The Two Ways Koreans Say “Beyond the Limit”

Have you ever tried so hard to push beyond your limits…
only to realize you’ve gone a little too far?

In Korean, there are two small prefixes that carry that exact feeling —
초(超) and 과(過).

Both mean “to go beyond,”
but one feels powerful and inspiring— as if you’ve surpassed yourself.
The other feels like a gentle warning— when something has gone just a bit too far.

Today, through everyday words, we’ll explore how these two characters are used in Korean.
