280 | Intermediate - Short Story: Whispers from the Lake [English Listening Practice]

Title: Whispers from the Lake

Level: Intermediate (B2)

#Story :

Emma and Lucas, a couple seeking peace from their stressful lives, rent a remote cabin by a misty lake for the weekend. Soon after they arrive, Emma is drawn to the lake’s strange stillness and hears soft whispers calling out, “Don’t forget me.” Near the water’s edge, she finds an old silver locket with portraits of a young couple and an inscription hinting at a forgotten love story. Curious, they visit the nearby village, where they learn about Eleanor and James—a couple from long ago who were forbidden to be together and vanished in a storm while trying to escape across the lake. Emma realizes that the spirits of Eleanor and James are still bound to the lake, waiting for their story to be finished. Guided by their whispers, Emma returns the locket to the water, allowing their spirits to finally find peace. As the mist clears, Emma understands that some love stories never truly end—they simply wait to be remembered.
