As destiny will have it, the same Bareilly brings a new, fresh turn to Bachchan's life. But this fresh, fragrant breeze was to come all the way from Lahore (still a part of India before partition). पिछले अंक में हमने बात की थी कि किस तरह बरेली के कवि सम्मेलन के बाद बच्चन जी की कविताओं के रसिक एक युवक ने आत्महत्या कर ली थी और उसका कविराज पर कितना गहरा प्रभाव पड़ा। लेकिन यही बरेली कवि के जीवन में एक नया, ताज़गी भरा मोड़ भी लाने वाला था। लेकिन बरेली में कवि के तन-मन को भीतर तक स्पर्श कर जाने वाली ये नरम, सुवासित बयार तो लाहौर की ओर से चलकर आने वाली थी। तो चलिए पहले लाहौर का एक चक्कर लगा लेते हैं।

क्या जीता यदि जीता मुझको, मेरी दुर्बलता के क्षण में!
है हार नहीं यह जीवन में।
तुमने समझा मधुपान किया?
मैंने निज रक्त प्रदान किया!
उर क्रंदन करता था मेरा,
पर मुख से मैंने गान किया!
मैंने पीड़ा को रूप दिया,
जग समझा मैंने कविता की।
मैं एक सुराही मदिरा की!

आशीष हथेली में भरकर
कोई मेरा सिर गोदी में रख सहलाता, मैं सो जाता!
कोई गाता मैं सो जाता!
संसृति के विस्तृत सागर पर -
सपनों की नौका के अंदर
सुख-दुख की लहरों पर उठ-गिर बहता जाता मैं सो जाता!
कोई गाता मैं सो जाता!
मेरे जीवन का खारा जल,
मेरे जीवन का हालाहल
कोई अपने स्वर में मधुमय कर बरसाता, मैं सो जाता!
कोई गाता मैं सो जाता!

क्या न किसी के मन को भाया,
दिल न किसी का बहला पाया?
क्या मेरे उर के अंदर ही गूँज मिटा उर क्रंदन मेरा?
व्यर्थ गया क्या जीवन मेरा
