This week, we’re diving into the underworld of the mighty goddess Hekate, or as she’s briefly invoked in Practical Magic’s infamous resurrection scene, “Mighty Hektate, make it right!” We’ll also find her presence woven through Alice Hoffman’s novels, as she guides the Owens women through darkness, transformation, and choice.
Joining us today is Vincent Higginbotham, author of How Witchcraft Saved My Life: Practical Advice for Transformative Magick and co-author of Thrifty Witchery: Magick for the Penny-Pinching Practitioner, both published through Llewellyn. Vincent’s story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and the kind of magick born from survival. Through his devotion to Hekate and a longing for a maternal presence in his life, he’s learned that vulnerability is power and transformation can bloom even in the darkest shadows.
Together, we explore Hekate’s many faces — torchbearer, keyholder, and guardian of the crossroads— and what it means to walk her path in modern witchcraft. Kristina’s hesitations about getting to know the great goddess herself are then put to rest (because sometimes the dark can be surprisingly welcoming).
