Hello and welcome to this episode.
In this episode, we will talk about negative group pressure.
Why should we talk about it?
Because people who deal with negative group pressure often don't know what to do about it.
I want to touch your heart, so let’s pretend that you are the one that needs help.
But first, what is group pressure?
Group pressure means that a group of people constantly puts pressure on you to do something or not do things that you don’t want to do.
How do you recognize group pressure?
Group pressure is the pressure experienced by a group member to conform his behavior to what the group perceives to be normal.
If your behavior deviates from what the group considers desirable.
And you have to adjust your behavior to the behavior that is considered as normal, then you are dealing with group pressure.
Group pressure can be both negative and positive.
And negative group pressure can have lasting negative consequences for someone.
What will happen if you continue to associate with that group?
If you keep hanging out with them, the pressure will eventually overcome you.
And at the end you will also smoke cigarettes.
Or maybe you will do something else that you really don't want to do.
You will certainly not like doing that in the beginning.
You may even feel guilty about doing it.
Could you have done something to prevent yourself from collapsing under the pressure and taking up smoking?
What do you think of this thought?
The one walking with the wise will become wise, But the one who has dealings with the stupid will fare badly.
You can find this thought in the Holy Scriptures in the book of Proverbs chapter 13 verse 20
What does it mean and what's in it for you?
It means that someone who associates with sensible people will do sensible things.
But whoever has the wrong friends will do bad things.
In addition, you have this:
If you have friends who are a bad influence on you, you will have to make the choice whether to stay friends or not.
No one else will be able to make that choice for you.
You will have to make that choice yourself.
I do understand it can be difficult to make that choice, because when I was younger I hung out with friends who used to smoke cigarettes.
They never forced me to smoke cigarettes, but because most of them were smoking, I felt that I wasn't really part of the group.
I didn’t recognize it as group pressure.
So I started smoking, and I felt guilty about it.
After a few years I stopped smoking cigarettes and that was not easy.
So that’s why I want to help people to recognize group pressure.
If you are under group pressure and you want to quit, it’s oké.
Maybe you can quit on your own, but maybe you need help.
From who?
From people who have a positive influence on you.
Do you know such people?
I think that you do know these people very well.
And you know they have your best interests at heart and that they will help you.
In this episode we spoke about negative group pressure and how you can deal with it.
Negative group pressure can have lasting negative effects on people and can leave one with a bad feeling.
Or in the long term perhaps poor health.
The best thing to do is cut ties with those who are a bad influence on you and reach out to people who have a positive influence on you.
