Di dalam Alquran, kata 'dzikir' disebut sebanyak 267 kali dengan berbagai bentuk kata (derivasinya). Diantaranya, bermakna mengingat Allah, dalam arti menghadirkan dalam hati. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا (41) وَسَبِّحُوهُ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلاً (42) "Hai orang-orang yang beriman, berzikirlah (dengan menyebut nama) Allah, dzikir yang sebanyak-banyaknya. Dan bertasbihlah kepada-Nya di waktu pagi dan petang."
