It is incredibly important in a musical to not only keep your audience engaged, but to have them so in it that they need to know what happens next. Creating suspense can be difficult in any genre and medium, but it can seem particularly difficult to create in a musical. So, what is it exactly that helps to create suspense, and how can we apply that to our musicals?

"The Witching Hours" is a semi-autobiographical one-act pop-punk musical about transness, witchcraft, ancestry, healing from trauma, and choosing to fully embrace your authentically self. With the frame of a pop punk band's release party for their first "sellout" album - tinged with bitterness, excitement, eerie atmosphere, and a touch of the occult - this musical explores the journey of healing from a past you can't outrun, no matter how hard you try. Through the lens of a gender revelation, we are brought into the protagonist's world as they come face to face with everything they thought they could keep bottled up as it explodes out of them and into their music, reverberating across the space and everyone immersed in its wake.
