Enviro-tech - 1st Biodegradable Plastics in Africa

In this episode of No Free Lunch, I chatted to Nick De Beer, founder of Fortis X. We discussed his company’s journey from producing containers and other plastic goods for the medical field to developing biodegradable plastic solutions.

Initially involved in producing medical devices, De Beer noticed the significant plastic waste generated in the industry. This realisation, coupled with environmental concerns observed during personal experiences, led to the pursuit of sustainable alternatives.

Fortis X focused on creating biodegradable bottles made from sugarcane, a venture that required extensive research and collaboration with chemical engineers. Despite initial failures, the company successfully launched Africa’s first biodegradable bottle, gaining certification from the European Standards Authority.
