Hello fellow travellers, in this episode I discuss and appreciate the positive living legacies of slavery in the Cape. One of those heritages include BoKaap, which is a slave descendent islamic community situated above Cape Town's city centre. I offer travel advice on some of the places you can visit and cultural activities you can participate in, that include the BoKaap museum and Tweede Nuwe Jaar carnival.
Bokaap is a community that, although, is impacted by the dominant narratives of black vs white, African spirituality vs christianity which have come to define South Africa, it is not defined by them. Therefore, it is an example of how diverse South African society, cultural heritage and religion is. It is not propaganda but a true, lived South African reality. Enjoy!
