Artist Interview Series | Michael Coppage

Michael Coppage has lived and worked in Cincinnati since 2007. Coppage earned a B.F.A in Sculpture from Memphis College of Art and an M.F.A in Studio Art from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Primarily a conceptual artist, Coppage has uses a plethora of artistic media including photography, video and sculpture to address issues around subconscious bias and racial disparities. He has traveled around the world extensively and has work in a number of private collections. Coppage has recently been featured in print an online for a controversial and provocative series entitled "American +" where he addresses the appropriation of African-American culture and the simultaneous demonization of black men as well as depicts white Americans as monkeys. Coppage is the winner of the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Foundation Enlightenment Award for his work in providing education and reducing stigma in the community. He also received a Truth and Reconciliation Grant to expand his Black Box community engagement series which addresses the stigma associated with the color black. His TEDx Talk “Everybody’s Racist” premiered on 2/27/21.
