· Inhalation of stomach   contents or secretions of the oropharynx

· Causing lower respiratory   tract infection

· The secretions are   colonised by pathogenic bacteria

· Most common in vomiting   patients

· Sometimes gastric reflux

· Rarely nasogastric tube   placed in lung instead of stomach
