With Sergi Herrando, a researcher at CREAF and Catalan Ornithological Institute and a chair of the European Bird Census Council, we discuss atlases of bird distribution. How the atlases are done, what challenges we face and how the results are used in research and policy. From a continental scale to the scale of cities of Barcelona and Prague we discover sometimes surprising changes in bird distribution and abundance.
