Disability Visibility - A Human Right | Radar 2021
About a billion people, or fifteen percent of the world’s population, live with some kind of disability, and in recognition of Universal Human Rights month and International Day of Persons with Disabilities, it’s important to acknowledge the progress made since the Americans’ with Disabilities Act was passed over thirty years ago. The law has helped Americans gain better access to public spaces, transportation and job opportunities. However, while the ADA’s impact has been profound, the law hasn’t gone far enough. There are still gaps to fill in terms of ensuring that our infrastructure, work places and media are all spaces where people with disabilities are not an afterthought, but a main priority. True equity for disabled communities—whether for inclusivity or visibility—has proven to be an ongoing process, and in examining how far we’ve come, we can make room to hold ourselves and our leadership accountable to doing better.
