Emerging Latino Populations | Radar 2021
In collaboration with NBC Latino : https://www.nbcnews.com/specials/new-... Senior Producer : Grace Solorzano Latinxs are driving demographic growsth in the US, surpassing the 62 million mark per the 2020 Census. Amid numerous natural disasters, a global pandemic, and the threat of a citizenship question being added to the census, the roadblocks to thwart the count of US Latinx populations were mostly overcome. The census revealed numerous emerging Latinx communities throughout the US—not all in the big metro areas and some in places we would never expect. It also revealed that the number of people in the U.S. who identify as multiracial more than tripled. But is this growing multiracial community solely the result of diverse population growth or is it also the result of how people self-identify? Or, does it have to do with the fact that many Latinx people don’t identify as white, Black or Asian or consider Latinidad to be its own distinct racial category? Whatever the case may be, the Census data is vital in determining how the federal government allocates billions of dollars for critical social services, college costs, hospitals, public works, infrastructure and so much more to every community throughout the US. #Radar2021 is a weekly news show that dives into current issues and breaks them down through various perspectives across the Latinx community.
