Jonathan Santo, Ph.D.: Adolescents and sleep: Navigating the teen sleep cycle | Raising Parents #79
A child’s sleep cycle is an important part of keeping them healthy. There’s a lot more research these days pertaining to the different durations each age group should be getting a night. Today we’re looking at the reasons why your teenager may be having problems sleeping, and there is more of a reason as to why they’re playing video games till late hours of the night.
Our guest to guide us through this episode is Jonathan Santo, Ph.D., a professor in psychology at the University of Nebraska. He aims to improve the lives of adolescents through their environment and believes in promoting positive peer relationships.
In this episode, Jonathan Santo, Ph.D. shares how hormonal changes and bullying are both factors in changing sleep patterns, and how inadequate sleep may have an affect on mental health.
Together, Dina and Jonathan Santo, Ph.D. discuss practical steps that parents can take, such as changes in the home, if a child or adolescent has ongoing struggles with sleep. They go further to discuss reaching out for help from a sleep specialist if necessary.
