Episode 18 - Kimberley Garlick - Northern Rivers Pilates
In this episode, I sit down to chat with Kimberley Garlick of Northern Rivers Pilates in Lismore, NSW. Kimberley has been teaching Pilates since 1997. She opened her first studio - The Pilates Room in Sydney in 1999 and then opened Northern Rivers Pilates in Lismore in 2009. She has undertaken several certifications but found her community in Polestar in 2002 when they were doing their initial course in Australia and then became an educator for them in 2003. In early 2022, the Lismore floods destroyed Kimberley’s studio and we will talk about the aftermath of that and how the Pilates and local community rallied around to help rebuild and how Kimberley also helped to raise money for her Pilates community in the aftermath. We also dive deep into  the nuts and bolts of running a studio and what that really entails from Kimberley’s learnings along the way. Kimberley’s story is truly one of resilience and speaks to the goodwill she has built up through her own altruistic actions as well as her local community and the Pilates community at large. We talk about: How Kimberley started her journey into Pilates and how her curiosity for the method shaped her early years as a teacher. Her first years as a studio owner - starting in her local gym and building from there How she managed to run 2 studios, commuting to keep her business running How her family plays a large role in her Pilates career How running a studio in a large city, vs smaller community was a steep learning curve The devastation of the Lismore floods in 2022 and her story of rebuilding her studio, while helping her local community How her pilates community rallied around to help her get back on her feet Her 5 year plan for getting the studio back to how it operated before the floods.   Kimberley mentioned: Brent Anderson:  Principles of Movement: The Brain That Changes Itself   To get a hold of Kimberley: Northern Rivers Pilates info@northernriverspilates.com.au On instagram:  @officialnorthernriverspilates   More about Kimberley: Kimberley is the owner and Director of Northern Rivers Pilates. As a senior educator for Polestar Pilates International, she has presented worldwide on topics related to Pilates and nutrition. Kimberley is also a motivational speaker with a background in full-time ballet and a degree in sports science. She is deeply passionate about helping people move better for their overall wellness and can be found working in all areas of the studio.
